Catering guide · 2026 Party catering at home in Dubai
Quick answer
For a party at home, give the caterer your headcount (children under 10 count as half), the time you want to eat and the space you have for a buffet table and power. Pick one or two mains that hold well, add a vegetarian dish, tell your building security about the delivery, and keep food out for no more than two hours.
Why cater a party at home
Cooking for 30 people at home means two days in the kitchen and no time with your guests. Catering hands over the cooking, and the serving too if you want a buffet setup. This guide covers how to plan it in a Dubai home, from a villa garden to a flat with a lift.
1. Get the headcount right
Count adults and children separately. For quantities, children under 10 count as about half a guest. For family gatherings, plan for the number you expect to arrive, which is often higher than the number who replied. Our food per person guide has a calculator for this.
2. Pick a menu that suits a home party
- Dishes that hold well: curries, biryani, grills, pasta bakes and rice dishes stay good on a buffet. Fried snacks and delicate dishes lose quality fast.
- One or two mains plus rice, bread, a salad and a dessert is enough for most parties.
- Something for everyone: a vegetarian main, a milder dish for children and older guests, and clear labels for anything with nuts.
3. Plan the space
- Buffet table: a long table against a wall works for smaller parties. For more than about 60 guests, a table guests can reach from both sides keeps the queue moving.
- Power: if food is kept warm in electric chafing dishes, you need sockets close to the table. Ask your caterer what they bring.
- Plates, cutlery and serving spoons: check whether they are included.
- Bins and clean-up: decide who clears the buffet and takes equipment away.
4. If you live in a building
Tell your building's security or reception about the delivery, and book the service lift if your building requires it. Give the caterer the building name, tower, parking or drop-off point and a phone number for whoever will meet them.
5. Timing
Tell the caterer when you want to eat, not when guests arrive. Food should arrive shortly before serving, not hours early. For evening parties, many families in the UAE eat late, so be realistic about when dinner will actually be served.
6. Outdoor parties in the heat
From May to September, garden and rooftop parties need extra care. Keep the buffet in the shade or indoors, keep cold dishes chilled, and serve food in smaller batches instead of putting everything out at once.
7. Food safety and leftovers
As a general food safety rule, don't leave hot or cold food at room temperature for more than two hours, and no more than one hour on a hot day outdoors. Put leftovers in the fridge promptly, in shallow containers, and reheat them until piping hot.
