Catering guide · 2026 How much food per person for catering?

Quick answer

For a buffet meal, plan about 150 g of cooked rice, 175 g of meat, chicken or fish across all main dishes, 100 g of vegetable dishes, 75 g of salad, 1 to 2 pieces of bread and one dessert per adult guest. For a two-hour event with only bites, plan about 10 savoury and 3 sweet pieces per guest. Count children under 10 as half.

Start with the type of event

How much food you need depends first on what your guests expect. A full meal (lunch or dinner, usually served as a buffet) needs a main course with sides, bread, salad and dessert. A light event, such as a networking evening, an open house or a two-hour reception, runs on bites and drinks instead. Mixing the two up is the most common reason for running out, or for throwing half the food away.

Full meal: how much food per guest

For a buffet lunch or dinner, these are widely used planning amounts per adult guest. The weights are for cooked food, as it is served.

Full meal: food per adult guest, with totals for 50 and 100 guests
ItemPer guest50 guests100 guests
Rice or biryani (cooked, served with other mains)150 g7.5 kg15 kg
Meat, chicken or fish mains (cooked, all dishes together)175 g8.75 kg17.5 kg
Vegetable and lentil dishes100 g5 kg10 kg
Salads75 g3.75 kg7.5 kg
Bread (naan, roti or rolls)1.5 pieces75 pieces150 pieces
Appetisers, alongside a meal3 pieces150 pieces300 pieces
Dessert1 portion50 portions100 portions
Water750 ml37.5 litres75 litres

Two things that surprise people. First, the meat figure is for all main dishes together: with chicken curry and lamb on the menu, guests take some of each, so 175 g covers both, not each. Second, when biryani is the main dish rather than a side, plan around 300 to 350 g of biryani per guest instead of the rice and meat lines above.

Light events: bites and drinks

For a two-hour reception, launch or open house with no main meal, plan by pieces instead of weight:

Light event of about two hours: per adult guest
ItemPer guest50 guests100 guests
Savoury bites and canapés10 pieces500 pieces1,000 pieces
Sweet bites3 pieces150 pieces300 pieces
Drinks (water, juice, tea or coffee)3 servings150 servings300 servings

If the event runs longer than two hours, or overlaps with lunch or dinner time, guests will treat it as a meal. Either add a main course or plan nearer 14 to 16 bites per guest.

Type of event

Rules of thumb for a buffet, with children under 10 counted as half a guest. They don't include a buffer: most hosts add a little extra for a buffet. Your caterer should adjust them to your menu, your guests and the length of your event.

When to order more, and when to order less

    • Order more for dinner rather than lunch, for events that run longer than three hours, for buffets where guests serve themselves, and for younger crowds such as university events.
    • Order less for a short daytime meeting, for an event straight after another meal, or when most of the menu is heavy (biryani, rich curries, grills).
    • Children: count children under 10 as half a guest. Babies and toddlers rarely need their own portion.
    • Number of dishes: more dishes doesn't mean more food in total. Guests take smaller servings of each, so split the same total across the dishes.
    • Buffer: for a buffet, a small buffer covers guests who arrive without an RSVP and second helpings. A plated meal needs much less spare.

Headcount: the number that drives everything

Quantities are only as good as the guest count behind them. For office events, use confirmed sign-ups. For weddings and family events in the UAE, where extra guests often arrive, ask the host family for their realistic number, not the invitation list. Give your caterer a final number a few days before the event, and tell them if it changes.

    Don't forget dietary needs

Ask about vegetarian, vegan and allergy needs when you collect RSVPs. For a mixed crowd, make sure at least one main dish and one side are vegetarian, so no one is left with only rice and salad. Every Messify catering menu is 100% halal, and vegetarian dishes can be included in any menu.

Let the caterer do the maths

When you ask for a quote, give the caterer your headcount, the time you want to serve, how long the event runs and whether it is a full meal or a light event. A good caterer will turn that into quantities for your menu. Send us your details for a catering quote, or see catering in Dubai and across the UAE.
